In the dry lime stone area of the Dalmatian hinterland its way towards the sea makes the Krka River - a magnificent natural phenomenon. At the foot of the mount Dinara, in the eastern part of the Knin field,
it cuts its way through the narrow canyon and flows into the Adriatic sea at the Sibenik port. With the sunken part of its mouth its length is 72km. For its great natural, scientific and cultural value, it was proclamed The National Park in 1985.
Its area abounds in the traces of the ancient settlements. The oldest traces date back to the Stone Age. The archaeological research showed the pieces of the pottery, stone knives and some bones. At its right bank, from Skradin towards the Waterfalls, there are the remains of the Roman aqueduct built for the ancient Scardona and in the surrounding area there are few ruins of the Old-Croatian fortresses from the 14th ct.
The jewel of the National Park is definitely the islet of Visovac situated in the middle of the Visovac lake formed by the River Krka.
On the islet there is a Franciscan monastery which is a valuable cultural and historical monument. It was first mentioned in 1400 and ever since it has been a keeper of the historical documents from the past centuries. Even nowadays on the islet a school for the young Francicans works. Other important religious monument is the orthodox monastery of St.Archangel's first time mentioned in 1402. It keeps valuable book, icons, manuscripts and some church vestments.
The River Krka has seven lime barriers among which the best known is Skradinski buk, 45.7m high and its 17 cascades are 800m long. The waterfalls are 200-400m wide. Other best known waterfall is Roski, 25.5m high.
The quantity of water that falls from the
Skradinski buk cascades is 55m3/s and during heavy rains it rises up to 350m3/s. This aboundance in water results in rich vegetation so that along its course some 200 species of the Mediaterranean and Sub-Mediterranean plants can be found. The air along the River is extremely pure and is scented with exotic mixture of water and plants' scent. In the sunny days above the Skradinski buk a rainbow shows the spectacular colours in the spectrum so, instead of running underneath it, you can take a bath under the rainbow if you are romantic enough!
By the peculiar beauty of its long canyon, its cascades, spectacular lime forms, caves, green valleys and rich vegetation, Krka is one of the most beautiful and most popular excursion area in Dalmatia. Each year thousands of visitors come by boat from Skradin or by road towards Drnis to the two entrances, in Lozovac and at the Roski falls. The unique natural assets are complemented by the vast choice of the gastronomic delicacies like grilled fish and meat, local products and souvenirs and the old and renewed watermills which are opened for tourists to see the local people in their national costumes at the traditional craft of weaving - just like they used to do it centuries ago.
