The history of this Dalmatian place goes far back in the past. It was first mentioned in 1298 when it belonged to the noblemen from Bribir - the Subic family and later it became the property of the Sibenik Diocese and some noblemen from Sibenik.
The settlement itself was founded in the 15th ct. by the refugees who fled from the Turks. Nevertheless, this area was inhabited many centuries earlier than that which can be proved by the remnants of the Roman settlements found on the islet of St.Stephen. Many other historical monuments tell us about the gradual settlement and development of this place. There are, for example, defence walls from 1505, St.George's church built in 1506 and renewed in baroque style in the 17th ct., gothic sarcophagus with the relief from 1447 in the chapel on the local graveyard and the remnants of the Franciscan monastery from 1511.
Pirovac is situated along the Adriatic tourist road, 25km
northwest from Sibenik. It has typical Mediterranean aspect with its close built stone houses and narrow winding streets. Today its 1500 inhabitants occupy themselves mainly with the traditional jobs in agriculture and fishing as well as with tourism because on the Riviera of Sibenik, the biggest number of holiday homes is in Pirovac. The guests are offered 2500 beds in private rooms, apartments, hotel and camp sites. In the picuresque coves of Sitnica, Vrulje, Vrilo and Makirina there are beautiful beaches and the latter is known for its mud used for mud cures.
Apart from some twenty or more restaurants offering fish and meat specialities and summer sports events, Pirovac offers all you need for a pleasant holiday. This is what you will be told by every tourist or visitor of Pirovac who regularly visit this place.
