On the right bank of the river Krka, 16km far from Sibenik, lies Skradin. Its history dates back to the Illyrian times and it was named during the times of the Roman reign. At the site of the Illyrian town, ancient Scardona
was founded and it became important traffic, commercial and administrative centre.
The first written documents date from 339 B.C. and already in 530, a Diocese was founded here. During the turbulent centuries, because of its geo-strategic position, Skradin was constantly aimed at. When the Slavic tribes arrived in the area in the 7th ct., the Roman Scardona was completely destroyed and devastated. The Croats rebuild the settlement and its today's name was first mentioned in the 10th ct. as a Bishoph's see. The mighty Croatian Subic princes from Bribir ruled from here. In 1522 Skradin comes under the rule of the Turks who stay here till 1684 when the Venetians take over. They rule till 1797 when the French take over and finally the Austrians.
On the largest town's square there is a church of Mala Gospa from the 18th ct. with the bell tower some twenty metres far from it. In the very centre of the town there is St.Spiridon's orthodox church from the 19th ct., and there are also the churches of St.Petko and of St.Jeronim's.
The former inhabitants of Skradin were almost exclusively farmers who planted olive trees, wine grapes and fruit trees. Today they still stick to their traditional farming and because of the mixed waters in the bay there are fish and mussels farms, too. Tourism has also a long tradition here because there is no visitor or tourist who spends his/her holiday in Dalmatia and doesn't visit Skradin and the natural phenomena of the River Krka.
Peaceful little town with its narrow streets, rich gastronomic offer and its famous white wine Debit will satisfy even the most demanding visitors. If you come to Skradin by boat, through the canyon of the River Krka it will be definitely a unique experience and nobody forgets it. On that way, apart from Sibenik, there are also Zaton, Bilice and Raslina. For those who decide to put into the Skradin port, 200 berths are available in modern marina. The accomodation is available in private rooms, apartment and in a hotel. There are also nice beaches and playgrounds nearby. Those who enjoy the moments of solitude there are few beautiful beaches where occasional visitors are only swans, if you don't mind! Welcome!
